Chinese Requirements
In the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures
For the Classes of 2030 and earlier: a minor in Chinese language is available for students who have a substantial interest in Chinese language and culture.
Students in the Classes of 2027 and beyond may choose to major in Chinese language.

Requirements for the Major in Chinese
- Language: at least six courses in Chinese language
- Gateway Course: EA150 (Foundations of East Asian Languages and Cultures)
- Electives: two additional courses in Chinese and/or in English about Chinese culture
- Capstone experience: EA 493 to be taken in the fall of the senior year (or equivalent, by petition)
- Pre-approved immersive language study in a country where Chinese is spoken during an academic semester or summer (Jan Plan exceptions are considered, but only by petition)
Requirements for the Minor in Chinese
Six courses are required to fulfill the minor in Chinese. They include five language courses of at least three credits each at the level of Chinese 126 or above, and one more course chosen from either a 400-level course in Chinese or a course on Chinese literature/culture (needs to be approved by the advisor for Chinese) at the 200 level or higher.
