Japanese Requirements
In the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures
For the Class of 2030 and earlier: a minor in Japanese is available for students who have a substantial interest in Japanese language and culture.
Students in the Class of 2027 and beyond may choose to major in Japanese.

Requirements for the Major in Japanese
- Language: at least six courses in Japanese language
- Gateway Course: EA150 (Foundations of East Asian Languages and Cultures)
- Electives: two additional courses in Japanese and/or in English about Japanese culture
- Capstone experience: EA 493 to be taken in the fall of the senior year (or equivalent, by petition)
- Pre-approved immersive language study in Japan during an academic semester or summer (Jan Plan exceptions are considered, but only by petition)
Requirements for the Minor in Japanese
Six courses are required to fulfill the minor in Japanese. They include five language courses of at least three credits each at the level of Japanese 126 or above and one more course chosen from either a 400-level course in Japanese or a course on Japanese literature/culture (needs to be approved by the advisor for Japanese) at the 200 level or higher.
