Music-Interdisciplinary Computation
Description
A MUIC degree allows students to explore the connections between music and technology. It opens the door for creativity and research empowered by the power of machines. Students can explore areas such as music performance involving technology, creative coding, computer-aided composition and analysis, sound art and sound installations, artificial intelligence and machine learning applications, audio visualizations, advanced audio synthesis and sampling, etc.

Student: Trevor Yamada (2022 class)
Project: SPEAC Analysis: An Analytical Approach to Understanding Musical Creativity
Description: How does one describe musical creativity to someone who doesn’t know anything about music? How do you explain the feelings associated with a motif or with a key or chord progression? How would you describe these aspects of music to a computer? These are some of the questions I asked myself this year while researching the intersection of musical creativity and computer science. Through a contextual and hierarchical analytical approach to western tonal music, called SPEAC Analysis, a computer can begin to understand the intangible aspects of musical creativity ‘hidden between the notes’ and begin to build a framework from which to derive a better understanding of how humans create music.
Student: Erik Cohen (2022 class)
Project: Computational Music: ML Visualizer
Description: Using a data-driven procedure audio files are transformed into interesting videos that capture meaning in unpredictable ways. Learn about tools used by digital musicians and how AI can be used in the creation of meaningful art. You are invited to experience music through the latent space of BigGAN.
