Resources for the Classroom

Here are some resources to help faculty members consider how they might better promote academic integrity in their classrooms. Some of these resources are suitable for sharing with students. If you have additional resources that you’ve found helpful, please don’t hesitate to share them with the Academic Integrity Coordinator.

  • The Colby Affirmation is a wonderful articulation of the values we aspire to live.
  • The Colby Library guide on avoiding plagiarism. This site includes sample policies from different disciplines, links to Purdue’s excellent resources on how to avoid plagiarism and links to advice from Colby’s own Farnham writers’ center.
  • Case studies, based on actual cases at Colby, for discussing academic integrity practices with your students.
  • Advice on giving take-home exams, compiled by the Academic Honesty Committee and the Center for Teaching and Learning
  • Ways to plagiarize, a guide by Professor Moland (philosophy). It is included here with permission and you are welcome to distribute it to your students.
  • Academic Integrity Promotion Faculty Document prepared by the Academic Honesty Committee and the Center for Teaching and Learning
  • Indiana University at Bloomington has a thorough tutorial on academic dishonesty and plagiarism.
  • The book Cheating in College (McCabe, Butterfield, Treviño; Johns Hopkins 2012) contains a wealth of data collected over decades of research into academic dishonesty at colleges, universities, and professional schools. If you would like a copy, the Academic Integrity Coordinator can provide you with one.
  • The book Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty (Lang; Harvard 2013) thoughtfully discusses ways pedagogy can contribute to a culture of academic integrity. This book is suitable for individual professors who want to consider academic integrity practices in their own classrooms. If you would like a copy, the Academic Integrity Coordinator can provide you with one.
  • Summaries of survey responses and assessments of the culture of academic integrity.
