Jan Plan Selection: Instructions for Students
Jan Plan 2026 Selection: Instructions for Students
Overview
Select one of these Jan Plan options:
- January Course
- Independent Study (including Honors Project)
- Internship
- Transfer Course *
- No Jan Plan *
* Options 4 and 5 are not available to first-years. Please note also:
- Your designated day and time to register for a Jan Plan course can be located on your Academics dashboard in Workday.
- To be eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics, campus organizations, or other co-curricular campus events during January, you must be enrolled in a Jan Plan course, independent study, or internship.
- Remember that to be eligible for graduation, you must complete three Jan Plans if you are in residence for seven or more semesters, or two if in residence for six or fewer semesters.
- Students should be registered for an approved activity (course, independent study, or local internship) by November 20. If you have not registered for a Jan Plan course by November 20, you will NOT be able to be present on campus during Jan Plan.
Navigate to your Workday Menu in the top left corner and select Student Academics Dashboard under Student.
- On the right hand side, review the Find Course Sections for Registration (curriculum search) and create saved schedules.
- The saved schedules tool allows you to troubleshoot any potential issues in advance [of your registration appointment], including course prerequisites or co-requisites. You can create multiple saved schedules as back-up in the case that one of your courses is full. Some other action items to consider include the following:
- Eligibility (Rules): Eligibility criteria will indicate what is required for a student to get into a course. This can include things like prerequisites, co-requisites, majors, minors, or class standing.
- Request Course Section Prerequisite Override: If you wish to register for a course for which you are not eligible to enroll due to an unmet prerequisite, class standing requirement, major requirement (or similar), you may request instructor approval of a course prerequisite override. It is recommended to request this override before registration begins.
- Financial Holds: If you have a financial hold on your account, detailed information will be available in your student profile under the Action Items and Holds section. This hold may impact your ability to register. If you have a hold, please reach out to Student Financial Services at [email protected].
Check Reserved Seat Limits on a Course: Some courses have reserved seats for selected eligibility groups. For example, some of our 100-level courses have reserved seats for our first-year students. It is important to take this information into consideration when building your schedule.
Option 1: January Course
When it is your designated time to register:
- You can register from your previously saved schedule in Workday or by individual course via the Find Course Sections for Registration.
- You will be able to add yourself to a Waitlist if a section is full. If a seat opens up in the course, Workday will notify the first student on the Waitlist to offer them a seat. The student will have 24 hours to submit/accept or to deny/skip the Waitlist offer or to remove themself entirely from the Waitlist. (Note: Students are limited to two Waitlists.)
If you have been admitted into one of the ‘trip’ Jan Plans or one of the other Jan Plans that requires special permission/application, the Registrar’s office will register you directly. You do not need to register for the course yourself.
Option 2: Independent Study (on or off campus)
During Jan Plan, we encourage students to take advantage of the rich set of course offerings. Students interested in independent studies should begin with a conversation with the faculty member. Please note that Faculty may or may not be available to oversee an independent study. Only after securing the faculty member’s agreement should a student go into Workday to request a prerequisite override and register for the Independent Study.
Independent Study or Honors Registrations are in Workday.
-
- Independent Study: In the search bar of Find Course Sections for Registration, you can search for Independent Study and then narrow down to your subject and faculty sponsor. You will need to Request Course Section Prerequisite Override of your faculty sponsor. If approved, you will be able to register for your independent study. Credits for IS registrations can range from 0-3 credits for Jan Plan.
- Honors: In the search bar of Find Course Sections for Registration, you can search for Honors and then narrow down to your subject and faculty sponsor. You will need to Request Course Section Prerequisite Override of your faculty sponsor. If approved, you will be able to register for your independent study. Credits for honors registrations can range from 0-3 credits for Jan Plan.
First-year students are required to live on campus for Jan Plan.
Applications must be submitted and approved by November 20, to secure access to campus housing and dining services.
Note: As noted in the Catalogue, “projects ordinarily involve the preparation of an extensive paper or other suitable indication of the student’s independent research or artistic efforts,” regardless of the number of academic credits. Proposals that involve studying for, preparing for, or otherwise completing work for a standardized exam (e.g., MCAT, GRE, LSAT) will not be accepted.
Option 3: Internship
- Internship Applications should be submitted and approved by your faculty sponsor by November 20 if you need to secure access to campus housing and dining services.
Notes:
- Credit for an internship appears as a notation on your academic transcript.
- In addition, you can apply to receive one academic credit hour by completing additional work.
- An internship can earn Jan Plan credit, whether it is paid or unpaid, and whether or not it earns an academic credit hour.
- Internships require a minimum of 100 hours on site and the following submissions to the project sponsor:
- a daily journal
- a final project (if pursuing optional credit hour)
- a letter from the site supervisor, evaluating performance and confirming hours worked
First-year students are required to live on campus for Jan Plan.
Option 4: Transfer Course (from another institution, in the U.S. or abroad)
- File the Application for Transfer of Credit form (required) with the Registrar’s Office before taking the course.
Note: This is not an option for first-years.
Option 5: No Jan Plan
If you are not registering for a Jan Plan, no additional action is needed.
Note: This is not an option for first-years.
Remember that to be eligible for graduation, you are required to complete three Jan Plans if you are in residence for seven or more semesters, or two if in residence for six or fewer semesters.
